Uses an innovative physical microwave method based on the principle of thermalization of electromagnetic energy for dielectric heating. The idea for the design of this system came from the observation that many types of biological pests (woodworm, moulds etc) cannot survive temperatures higher than the so-called “Lethal Temperature” (LT). By exploiting the thermal effects of microwaves associated with the interaction of electromagnetic fields with polar molecules (particularly water), it is possible to raise the temperature of life forms classified as pests above their LT which experiments have shown to be in the range of 55-60°C.
The disinfestation process is divided into three stages: DIAGNOSIS – TREATMENT – MAINTENANCE
DIAGNOSIS:
The first stage of diagnosis begins with the examination of the infested object and the verification of any critical points and related actions to be undertaken. The degradation of wood is caused not only by biotic agents but also depends on physiological factors such as temperature, humidity and light. The diagnosis of the item, of its characteristics, of the damage present, and of the causes of the damage is fundamental to professionalism in customer service. The technicians will assess, at their own discretion, whether treatment is necessary and if so what type of treatment is appropriate for the object in question. D.A.Greenproject always recommends the use of deterrents such as mosquito nets, to create a barrier against all types of insects. TREATMENT: Microwave technology is based on the differential heating of materials according to their dielectric characteristics.
By exploiting the thermal effects of microwaves associated with the interaction of electromagnetic fields with polar molecules (particularly water), it is possible to raise the temperature of life forms classified as pests above their Lethal Temperature, which experiments have shown to be in the range of 55-60°C. Any material containing even a small quantity of water, if subjected to an oscillating magnetic field, undergoes heating. A molecule of water is a molecule in which, in proximity to two atoms of hydrogen, a partial positive charge is formed, while in the proximity of an atom of oxygen a partial negative charge is created. When this molecule is subjected to an external oscillating electromagnetic field, its electronic imbalance produces a rotation which follows the oscillations of the field. The greater the oscillations of the external field, the faster the molecules of water move. These movements create friction between the water molecules which generates heat inside the object.
Life forms classified as pests consisting largely of water (60-70%) are subjected to rapid overheating resulting in death. Electromagnetic fields are characterized by a very high number of oscillations (300MHz to 300GHz per second). The oscillation frequency is closely linked to the energy conveyed by the wave. The higher the frequency, the greater the energy carried by the wave.
At this stage the object will be subjected to microwave treatment carried out in several steps until the whole of the object in question has been treated. Throughout this stage, the technicians will control the time, the power and the temperature levels to be reached during the irradiation of the interior of the object. The Microwaves System for Art device is fitted with a timer which, when set, regulates the time needed to reach the appropriate temperature, before switching off automatically and proceeding to the next step.
The power of the microwave source is regulated according to the volume or the weight of the object to be treated. The electromagnetic field, generated in the atmosphere during irradiation, is monitored by means of an isotropic sensor tuned to a frequency of 2.45GHz: this allows the technician to regulate the power of the microwaves in accordance with the safety levels imposed by law.
During irradiation and for the whole period of the treatment, thanks to our technicians the immovable wooden structures to be disinfested are subjected to continuous monitoring of the temperature reached by means of infrared thermal sensors, in order to adequately supervise the selective operation of the heating process.
MAINTENANCE:Generally speaking, with time, any type of wood subjected to unfavourable atmospheric conditions, such as the sun’s rays, humidity, rain and changes of temperature, weakens, gradually loses its tone and the colour of its surfaces. Even if this can give the wood and the living space a rustic, antique appearance, wood needs looking after and polishing from time to time. Moreover, since it is subject to attack by biological agents, such as mould, fungi and woodworm, wood needs to be treated in a way that protects and conserves not only its external appearance but also its mechanical strength.
This is why D.A.Greenproject, always attentive to natural topics, uses waxes and oils which nourish and protect. Another preventive treatment is the use of Salts. Specifically, we are referring to penetrating salts for wood, which offer protection against mould and fungi by making the wood unpalatable to woodworm and other pests. The operation is protective, preventative and long-lasting.
It has a neutral pH value and is free from acrylic resins, vinyls, alkyds, of polyurethanes, aliphatic compounds, biocides and toxic substances in general. The treatment is applied diluted with water, by spray or brush, depending on the surface to be treated.
Other deterrents that it is advisable to use are UV or pheromone lamps. They should be installed well within the home, possibly in the passageways (corridors), and are important tools in the fight against woodworm found in the home, but also against other unwelcome insects. Once installed, they operate 24 hours a day and after several months it is necessary to change the film where the insects are captured. Their job is to attract flying insects through the diffusion of light of differing intensity and capture them on an adhesive tape placed inside the lamp.
